The name itself speaks to the area's deep indigenous roots, deriving from the Seminole-Creek words ronoto and sasv, which collectively mean "flint was there." The area's importance continued into the early American settlement period. Following the establishment of Fort Brooke (now Tampa) in 1824, the Fort King Road was constructed, passing along the northwestern end of Lake Thonotosassa. This military road was a critical route, and a local legend suggests that the region's prominent citrus industry was inadvertently started here. Retreating Major Francis L. Dade and his troops are said to have discarded the seeds of Cuban oranges while resting near the lake, unintentionally growing the first citrus trees in the Thonotosassa region. By the late 19th century, the community had developed, with the arrival of the Tampa and Thonotosassa Railroad in 1893 connecting the community to the growing city of Tampa.
